What are essential features of switchgear? 7 Characteristics
In the last article I discussed what is switchgear? How many types? What are its ingredients? About this. Today we will know, what are essential features of switchgear? That is, about the importance of switchgear protection in electrical systems. Let’s get started.
Switchgear does not refer to a single object. It refers to the co-location of connecting, disconnecting, maintaining, controlling, teaching, and balancing apparatus for the normal functioning of the electrical system. Furthermore, they also mean managing the co-location of connectivity systems and associated equipment within themselves.
There are two main components of switchgear. Namely- circuit breakers and relays. Also, other components are CT, PT, busbar, contactor and tripping mechanism, etc.
It is not possible to completely fault-free the electrical power system. However, by reducing the number of faults and the severity of faults, the machinery used in the system can be saved from destruction. In order to protect the various devices used in the electrical system from any danger in abnormal conditions, the system of separating the healthy part from the defective part in a very efficient and accurate manner is called a protection scheme.
Capacity expansion is currently being done extensively using expansion systems to meet the growing electricity demand. Effective use of switchgear and protective devices is essential to efficiently protect the system against timely faults at increased capacity.
What are essential features of switchgear
1. Selectivity: Selectivity of the protective system is the ability to identify the faulty part of the system and isolate only the faulty part while keeping the rest of the supply uninterrupted.
2. Sensitivity: When a fault occurs in the power system, a huge fault current flows more than the normal current. It is called Actuating quantity. The ability to detect this actuating quantity of very small value by the relay of the protective system is called Sensitivity.
3. Reliability: Reliability is the ability to operate a protective relay under predetermined conditions.
4. Speedy: The protective gear should respond as quickly as possible to separate the faulty part from the non-faulty part. This will lead to better serviceability and increased equipment life and safety.
5. Stability: Stability is the ability to separate the faulty part from the healthy part of the power system and maintain a normal power supply to the healthy part.
6. Simplicity: Protective gear and devices should be simple in design and operation. The characteristics of the equipments used should be such that there is no hindrance in the future modification and expansion of the system. That is, No interference with future expansion or alternation
7. Economy: The most important factor is that the protective scheme should be as cost-effective as possible according to usage.
